This record is such a masterpiece! All songs are amazing, though my personnal favorites are Wait Until Tomorrow, Little Wing, Spanish Castle Magic (I love the rythm on that one, really strong and edgy at the same time), Castles Made Of Sand and Bold As Love. But again all the grooves on that album are so powerful, so right and straight forward! Bassist Noel Redding even said once that it was his favourite of the three Experience albums.
So Axis is a musical masterpiece, but don’t forget the cover.. Just look at it while listening to the first track and you’ll get straight to the moon! It’s a copy of a religious poster of the Hindu devotional painting known as Viraat Purushan-Vishnu Roopam. A painting of the group was superimposed on it. But apparently Hendrix himself didn’t like it, he would have preferred an native american reference, like a photograph of the band dressed as Indians.
