This record is quite unique, it features the Beatles’ earliest recordings except for the 1957 tapes. At that time (1961) they were rehearsing in Hamburg with Tony Sheridan and were known as his backing band, the Beat Brothers. So we might say it’s more of a Tony Sheridan & the Beat Brothers album although John sings on Ain’t She Sweet (with that unmistakable hoarse voice we all know so well!). Moreover some songs were taken out of Sheridan’s first album, My Bonnie.
It’s very interesting because you can always spot George’s guitar or John’s. Something is really happening there, a legendary band is growing, working on classics such as I Got A Woman, The Saints, My Babe or What’d I Say. In Hamburg they were performing every night, twice most of the time. It was quite a frenetic period of their career, maybe the most. This album has became a real classic to me.
